A 61-year-old woman was fatally struck inside a Manhattan Beach laundromat Tuesday evening when a black SUV accelerated through the front of the building, killing her as she did laundry, authorities said.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department responded to Suds & Duds Coin-Op Laundry on Aviation Boulevard near 10th Street shortly after 6 p.m. following reports of a vehicle crashing into the business. The SUV tore through the front of the structure, shattering the glass facade and damaging a load-bearing support beam in the process.

Ana Amaral Moreira, 61, was pronounced dead as a result of the collision. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner officially identified her as the victim. The driver, a woman whose identity has not been released, was unharmed and stayed at the scene, cooperating with police throughout the investigation.

Investigators are focused on determining what caused the driver to accelerate rather than brake before the vehicle struck the building. Authorities said alcohol was not considered a factor. No charges have been filed and no further details have been made public as the investigation remains ongoing.
