A 15-year-old Oakland girl died Friday after a high-speed hit-and-run crash involving multiple collisions and a brief vehicle pursuit, the Oakland Police Department reported.
Authorities identified the victim as Ashley Lopez Argueta, a passenger in a Toyota Corolla driven by a 16-year-old boy. The Toyota was involved in an initial crash near 14th Avenue and East 31st Street before its driver sped away from the scene.
According to investigators, the driver of the first vehicle attempted to follow the Toyota and notified police. Moments later, the Toyota collided with another vehicle while traveling north in the 3300 block of 35th Avenue, sending the car into a concrete wall.
Argueta and the four other occupants were taken to area hospitals. Argueta later succumbed to her injuries. Police said the juvenile driver remains in critical condition and has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
