A Riverside man was killed Tuesday evening after a driver suspected of being under the influence rear-ended his motorcycle at an intersection, striking him at a red light and sending him into an SUV, authorities said.
The collision unfolded at 8:40 p.m. at Van Buren Boulevard and Porter Avenue. According to the CHP, a 2017 Nissan Sentra struck a Harley-Davidson from behind while the motorcycle was stopped at a red light, forcing it into the intersection. The rider was then struck by a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV.
Christopher Tapia, 39, was declared dead at the scene. The Nissan Sentra driver was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The California Highway Patrol has opened an investigation into the deadly crash. Witnesses or anyone with relevant information are encouraged to contact the CHP directly.
