Daphne Peters, 57, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, died in a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday on Alabama 158 in Mobile County, authorities said.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Peters was operating a GMC Acadia when it collided head-on with a Freightliner tractor-trailer about six miles west of Semmes around 1:36 a.m.

Her passenger, a 58-year-old Mississippi man, was ejected during the crash and also died at the scene. Troopers reported that he was not wearing a seat belt.

After the initial collision, a second tractor-trailer, identified as a Volvo driven by a Florida resident, struck the Freightliner. Both truck drivers were taken to USA Health University Hospital for treatment.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
