California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a deadly chain-reaction crash on the 5 Freeway in Valencia that claimed the life of a Sacramento man Thursday night.

CHP said the crash began when a white Dodge became disabled and stopped facing the wrong direction in the fast lane of northbound Interstate 5 near Magic Mountain Parkway. A Toyota driven by Estevan Whitfield managed to stop safely, but a Jeep then collided with the Toyota from behind.

Authorities said that after the drivers exited their vehicles, a northbound GMC struck the stopped vehicles, setting off a series of impacts. Whitfield was fatally struck during the collision sequence. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators urged anyone with additional information to contact the CHP Newhall Area office as the investigation continues.
