A 66-year-old bicyclist died after being struck by a suspected drunk driver at the intersection of Stockdale Highway and Calloway Drive, according to Bakersfield police.

The Kern County Coroner's Office has since identified the victim as Bakersfield resident Gabriel Lopez Ortiz.

Investigators say the crash unfolded around 1 a.m. when Ortiz was pedaling westbound through the crosswalk at the intersection. A vehicle heading southbound reportedly disregarded flashing red signals and collided with him. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

A 49-year-old driver was taken into custody and booked on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with the fatal collision.

Bakersfield police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. No further information has been released at this time.
