A 34-year-old woman was killed Thursday morning when an Amtrak train struck a group of runners in Santa Fe Springs.

The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman who died as Graciela Vargas.

The Whittier Police Department, which patrols Santa Fe Springs, said Vargas and a second runner were struck near Lakeland Road and Bloomfield Avenue at approximately 8:45 a.m. Vargas succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The other runner involved was transported to a hospital and treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities have not released further details, and the investigation is ongoing.
