Isaiah Mendoza, a 7-year-old boy, died one week after being struck by a vehicle while riding an e-scooter in Apple Valley, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
The crash happened at approximately 8:18 p.m. Aug. 7 in the 21000 block of Outer Highway 18. Mendoza was riding an e-scooter in the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle.
Emergency responders treated the child at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Mendoza was subsequently airlifted to a trauma center for additional medical care.
Despite treatment, Mendoza died on Aug. 14, one week after the collision.
The driver involved in the crash stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Authorities said Mendoza's father, a 29-year-old Apple Valley man who was supervising the child at the time, was determined to be under the influence of drugs. He was arrested and charged with child cruelty causing great bodily injury or death.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is investigating the circumstances of the collision.
A fundraiser was set up to help cover Isaiah Mendoza's final expenses.
