Authorities are investigating a deadly two-vehicle collision that erupted into flames Tuesday afternoon in the 800 block of West Main Street and claimed the life of 19-year-old Barstow resident Jesus Avila.

According to the Barstow Police Department, the crash occurred around 1:53 p.m. when a gray Infiniti sedan and a tan Honda sedan collided head-on. Bystanders rushed to the scene and helped remove an unconscious man from the Infiniti after it caught fire.

The rescued occupant, later identified as Jesus Avila, was taken to Barstow Community Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Honda suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a regional trauma center for emergency treatment.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash and are asking anyone with information to contact investigators at 760-255-5134.
