A fatal wrong-way collision on Interstate 5 near San Diego International Airport early Friday morning resulted in the deaths of two drivers, including Jesus Verduzco, authorities confirmed.

Officials with the California Highway Patrol reported that the crash occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on southbound I-5, south of Laurel Street, when a blue Dodge Durango and a white Honda CR-V collided head-on.

Investigators said the crash involved a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, though it remains unclear which driver entered the freeway in the wrong direction.

Jesus Verduzco, a 62-year-old Bonita resident, was driving the Honda CR-V and died at the scene due to the severity of the impact. The driver of the Dodge Durango also suffered fatal injuries.

Emergency personnel responded quickly, but both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash caused significant disruption along the freeway as authorities secured the area and began their investigation.

The CHP San Diego Area Office continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the deadly collision.
