Authorities in Santa Maria are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that claimed the life of a 1-year-old child and left her mother critically injured.

According to police, Lailani Diaz Vazquez was being pushed in a stroller across a marked crosswalk at Broadway and Fesler streets when she and her mother were struck by a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old local resident.

The crash occurred as the driver attempted to turn right onto Broadway.

Emergency crews transported both victims to Dignity Health - Marian Regional Medical Center, where Lailani later succumbed to her injuries. Her mother remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Officials said evidence points to a potential right-of-way violation as the investigation continues.

Community members gathered at the site Tuesday to honor the young victim, leaving flowers and messages calling for safer driving.

A GoFundMe account has been established to support the family during this difficult time.
