A fatal weekend crash at a San Bernardino County intersection left a local mother dead and three others injured — among them two young children — after a vehicle blew through a stop sign Saturday night.
The collision was reported at around 8:20 p.m. at the intersection of Wichita Road and Zuni Road in Apple Valley. Investigators said a northbound 2022 Toyota Camry disregarded a posted stop sign and collided broadside into a 2021 Nissan Altima that was traveling westbound. The force of the crash caused the Toyota to erupt in flames.
Lorena Lopez, 33, a resident of Apple Valley, was driving the Nissan Altima at the time of the crash. She died at the scene. Two children who were passengers in Lopez's vehicle were transported to regional trauma centers with injuries. The driver of the Toyota Camry was rescued from the burning car and taken to a hospital for treatment.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Major Accident Investigative Team has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to reach out to the Apple Valley Police Department.
