A 38-year-old Escondido man died Tuesday after his Honda Accord was struck head-on by a wrong-way vehicle on Interstate 15 near Fallbrook, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Marcelo Bejarano was driving the Accord when a Ford Escape traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-15 collided with his vehicle. The crash happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. near Highway 76.
The impact resulted in a multi-vehicle pileup. Bejarano was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Escape sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The CHP is investigating the fatal collision and said the crash is believed to involve an intoxicated driver. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact the agency.
