California Highway Patrol officers are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 70-year-old King City man early Monday morning in Monterey County.

Authorities identified the victim as Melvin Elias.

According to investigators, Elias was walking on or near Private Road No. 2 west of Fort Romie Road southwest of Soledad when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle. Officials said the driver fled the scene following the collision and did not stop to provide aid.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced Elias dead from injuries sustained in the crash.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident and is asking anyone with information regarding the suspect vehicle or driver to come forward.
