Authorities are investigating a fatal bicycle crash that claimed the life of a 78-year-old man near Palomar College in San Marcos.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the crash occurred shortly after noon along West San Marcos Boulevard, west of Rancho Santa Fe Road. The bicyclist, identified as Olimpio Rodriguez Cervantes, was traveling in the westbound lanes when he was struck by an SUV.
Emergency responders found Cervantes in the roadway and attempted lifesaving efforts; however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officials said impairment has not been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing.
