A Caltrans subcontract worker died early Monday after being struck by a driver suspected of driving under the influence on a Highway 50 overpass in Sacramento, authorities said.
The victim was identified as 42-year-old Onias Rodriguez Alvila.
Ruby Lorenzo, 24, of Escalon, was arrested in connection with the crash and faces charges including vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence, and felony hit-and-run.
The California Highway Patrol said Lorenzo entered the northbound State Route 99 transition to Highway 50, which was closed for construction, and drove through cones and signage before merging into open lanes. She struck a GMC Acadia driven by an Uber driver, then swerved back into the construction zone and hit a truck belonging to a Caltrans subcontractor carrying two workers. Lorenzo continued eastbound and struck a worker standing on the overpass, sending him off the structure and onto Stockton Boulevard below.
That worker, identified as Alvila, later died from his injuries. The investigation remains ongoing.
