Sacramento County authorities are investigating a devastating overnight crash in Sloughhouse that killed two teenage girls, including Pleasant Grove High School student Piper Conkling, and injured three others.

Officials said the collision happened around 12:29 a.m. on Scott Road near Latrobe Road and Rancho Murieta. A vehicle carrying five juveniles was traveling northbound when it crossed into the opposite lane, slammed into a tree, and burst into flames.

Piper Conkling, 14, and the 16-year-old driver died at the scene. Three additional passengers, all 16 years old or younger, suffered moderate to major injuries and were transported to hospitals for emergency treatment.

The crash has deeply affected the local community, and a vigil was planned for Friday near North Laguna to remember the two victims.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
