Robert Fairbanks, 44, was killed Saturday night in a two-vehicle accident involving a Tesla and a Volkswagen in Long Beach, according to police.
The collision occurred at about 10:30 p.m. in the 5700 block of Pacific Coast Highway near Bellflower Boulevard in the Alamitos Heights community.
Investigators said a Tesla was traveling westbound on Pacific Coast Highway at a high rate of speed when it struck a Volkswagen that was exiting a shopping center.
After the initial collision, the Tesla jumped the curb and crashed into a cinder block wall, also causing damage to several parked vehicles. The Volkswagen subsequently struck a sign.
A 48-year-old woman driving the Volkswagen and her 43-year-old female passenger were taken to hospitals. Authorities did not immediately release information about their conditions.
Investigators said speed and impaired driving appeared to be factors in the accident. The crash remains under investigation.
