Authorities are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that claimed the life of an elderly woman Wednesday afternoon in La Mesa.

According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office, 80-year-old Saba Berhane was walking along a sidewalk near Fletcher Parkway shortly after noon when she was struck by a vehicle.

Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was attempting to make a right turn from a parking lot onto the roadway when the collision occurred.

Berhane suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later died from her injuries, officials said.

The identity of the driver has not been released, and investigators have not indicated whether any charges are pending.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.
