
Authorities are continuing to investigate a deadly wrong-way DUI crash on Interstate 680 that left Shanell Shari Smith dead and seven others injured late Friday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 11:23 p.m. near Treat Boulevard when a Dodge Charger entered the northbound lanes of I-680 while traveling southbound.
Investigators said the vehicle struck six other cars in a series of collisions along the freeway.
Shanell Smith, 42, of Antioch, was a passenger in one of the northbound vehicles and died as a result of the crash.
Seven additional individuals were injured, including the wrong-way driver. Four victims suffered major injuries, while three others sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene or transported to nearby hospitals.
Officials confirmed that the driver responsible for traveling the wrong way was impaired and has been arrested. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The California Highway Patrol has not released the identity of the driver but confirmed the suspect is a woman.
