Authorities are investigating a deadly crash in Madera County that occurred after a driver fled deputies early Sunday morning.

Officials said deputies responded to burglary reports near El Vado and Avenue 18½ and located the suspect vehicle shortly after 1 a.m. The driver fled but lost control and crashed near Highway 99 and Avenue 17.

Stephen Rodriguez, 13, and Benito Mendoza, 15, were identified as two of the four people who died in the crash. The driver and another passenger also died, while a fifth passenger was transported by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
