A 63-year-old man was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a street in Irvine Wednesday night, and the suspect remains at large, police said.

Steven Craig Cox was walking northbound in a designated crosswalk across Alton Parkway, on the east side of Irvine Center Drive, at around 8:55 p.m. when a westbound vehicle struck him. The driver failed to stop and fled the area immediately following the impact.

Emergency responders transported Cox to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from the injuries he sustained in the collision.

The Irvine Police Department described the suspect vehicle as dark-colored and said it likely sustained visible front-end damage as a result of the crash. No further description of the driver has been publicly released.

Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the driver and vehicle involved. Anyone with relevant information is asked to contact the Irvine Police Department. No arrests have been announced as of this report.
