Law enforcement officials are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash in Monterey County that left a 96-year-old man dead and another driver seriously injured.

According to the California Highway Patrol, William Ziering was traveling southbound on Highway 1 near Handley Drive when his vehicle crossed into opposing traffic around 12:30 p.m. on April 9.

Authorities said Ziering’s Lexus collided with a northbound Honda SUV before returning to the southbound lane and striking a Subaru sedan ahead of him.

Ziering died at the scene as a result of the crash. The driver of the Honda SUV, a 78-year-old Carmel woman, was transported to a hospital with major injuries.

The incident remains under active investigation by CHP.
